Plants and Animals
Sierra Leone is home to 2090 higher plant species, 147 known animal species, 172 breeding bird species, 67 reptilespecies, 35 amphibians, and 99 fish species.
Some plants in Sierra Leone are the cotton tree, mangrove, red ironwood tree, and dioncophyllaceae. Cotton trees (Bombax ceiba) are the historic symbol of Freetown, Sierra Leone's capital. According to legend, several former African American slaves that had become free by fighting in the American War for Independence had settled in the place that Freetown is now based. Later, they founded the settlement and it became Sierra Leone's capital. Sierra Leone's mangrove forests are threatened by the clearing of forests, overharvesting, and river changes. The mangrove forests line much of Sierra Leone's coastline. The dioncophyllaceae is a family of flowering plants.
Animals that live in Sierra Leone include the striped and spotted hyenas, four-toed hedgehog (or the African Pygmy Hedgehog), green monkey, warthog, African leopard, savanna sparrow, crocodiles, leatherback sea turtle, and Diana monkey. Four-Toed hedgehogs (Atelerix albiventris) are nocturnal, which means they are active at night, and they eat all kinds of insects including crickets and mealworms. Four-Toed Hedgehogs are often owned as pets. In some U.S. states, they are illegal, but some do allow them as pets, such as Wisconsin and Minnesota. In the U.S. they are more commonly known as African Pygmy Hedgehogs. The Four-Toed Hedgehog lives in the forests in Sierra Leone, which are very few.
Savannah Sparrows (Passerculus sandwichensis) has numerous subspecies. Savannah Sparrows are songbirds that don't hesitate to tell you where they are at every moment. The African leopard (Panthera pardus pardus) live in arid deserts and in dense rainforests, which is probably why they like Sierra Leone's savannas.
