Slavery
Bunce Island was one of forty slave castles, a.k.a. fortified trading posts, from the 18th century. They were for slave trade. Slave castles were called "Warehouses of Humanity".
Bunce Island is located in the Sierra Leone River in the present day Republic of Sierra Leone. It is about 20 miles upriver from Freetown, Sierra Leone's capital, in what is now called Freetown Harbour.
The British shipped thousands of slaves to southern colonies in North America. Henry Laurens was Bunce Islands business agent. Bunce Island was more direct to North America than other castles. Now, Bunce Island is a museum to teach about the slavery there.
